A UK cold snap can arrive with just a day's notice. The good news is that a few small habits go a long way. Here's a plain-English routine for the evening before a freeze.
1. Keep the warmth steady
Rather than blasting the heating for a few hours, many households find that a lower, steady setting through the day and night avoids the coldest dips. Closing doors to unused rooms helps keep heat where you need it.
2. Think about your pipes
- Find your stopcock now, before you ever need it, and check it moves.
- Open cupboard doors on external walls so warmer room air can circulate.
- Cover or drain outdoor taps and hoses.
- If you're going away, ask a neighbour to look in, and check your home's guidance on leaving heating on.
3. Beat the draughts
A draught excluder at the front door, a rolled towel along a window sill, or window film on single glazing all make a noticeable difference for very little money.
4. Get the car ready the night before
Put the scraper and de-icer somewhere you can reach without a trip to the boot. Pack a torch, warm layers and a charged phone, and allow a few extra minutes in the morning. Never pour boiling water on a frozen windscreen.
5. Look out for others
A quick text or knock on the door of an older neighbour is often the most useful thing you can do during cold weather.
